ANNOUNCEMENTS & ACTION ITEMS

• #CLDE16 | June 2 – 4, 2016 in Indianapolis | Proposals Due February 1st
  Submit your proposal for the 2016 Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement (CLDE)meeting organized by ADP, The Democracy Commitment (TDC) and NASPA: Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.
  Proposals are due February 1, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. ET and should be submitted online here.
• State of the Union Event powered by icitizen
  Headquartered at Illinois State University, our State of the Union watch event will include a live-stream of President Obama’s 2016 State of the Union address. Member institutions are encouraged to host viewing parties on their campuses, and individuals can participate individually if they are unable to attend a watch party. This event will feature interactive polling, live tweeting, and pre- and post-speech coverage designed entirely around advancing the non-partisan political engagement of college students.

• CLDE Student Intern Applications Due January 29th
  In order to encourage student participation in the 2016 Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement (CLDE) Meeting, The American Democracy Project, The Democracy Commitment and the NASPA Lead Initiative are proud to offer the opportunity for three students to have a voice on the planning committee. Each of the student interns will receive a complimentary registration to the 2016 Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement (#CLDE16) as well as transferrable work experience. The application can be found here.
• Call for Submissions | eJournal of Public Affairs Special Issue on Educating for Democracy
  This special issue concerns the intersection of higher education and political life. Of particular interested are the mechanisms and barriers that influence political learning, equity and democratic engagement. Submissions are due January 29, 2016. Find more information here.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE BLOG

• Engage the Election 2016
  ADP is excited to announce a year-long non-partisan Engage the Election 2016 partnership with The Democracy Commitment (TDC) and icitizen, a leading civic engagement app. With the State of the Union event (see above) serving as the launch event in January, this project will include comprehensive activities throughout the year centered on enhancing student political engagement through civic technology. Events will include a set of webinars, a pre-conference institute at the 2016 CLDE meeting and a set of presidential debate-watch events in the fall.
• Call for Participation: Research Study on Millennial Faculty & Civic Engagement
  A faculty member at Texas A&M University-Central Texas — a fellow ADP campus — is engaged in a research project focused on Millennial Generation Faculty Members and Civic Engagement. Interviews will be held through February 2016. Find more information here.
• Free Materials to hold forums on Economic Inequality from NIFI
  The guide will be ready for distribution in early December. The goal is to have 100 forums by the end of March 2016 so that the results of this research can be reported at the A Public Voice (APV) event in Washington on May 4th. Find out more here.

ADP CAMPUS SPOTLIGHTS

• Bloomsburg University (Penn.): Pennsylvania has made it easier for residents to register to vote and students can register online with TurboVote. Learn more here.
• Fort Hays State University (Kan.): Held a poster competition, “Let Your Voice Be Heard!” The class assignment resulted in an unprecedented landslide of social media engagement for the university.
• Georgia College’s ADP hosted a panel event on racial discrimination (more here and here).
• Indiana State University: An ISU event sponsored by ADP helped students realize the importance of voting, and some participants registered for the first time.
• Illinois State University: The American Democracy Project and School of Communication had their annual “Social Issues Fair” on November 9th. This event brings together students to “encourage and engage dialogue” on current political and social issues.
• Indiana State Universityis working on helping their students register to vote and become engaged in the election through debate watch parties. Learn more here and here.
• Indiana University South Bend: An Elkhart Mayoral Candidate Debate was held Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015, at the IUSB Elkhart Center. The debate was sponsored by the IUSB Political Science Club and the campus ADP. Learn more here.
• Keene State College (N.H.)hosted presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on October 16. Learn more about this event made possible by Keene’s ADP chapter here.
• Middle Tennessee State University hosted a panel on civil rights and the U.S. Constitution. Learn more here, here and here.
• Missouri Stateheld a Public Affairs Week focused on building healthy communities. Learn more here.
• Northeastern Illinois University held its Second Economic Inequality Initiative event to encourage students to confront, through critical discussion, the roots of economic inequality — and to challenge students to adopt an active role in addressing their solutions.
• Rhode Island College: RIC shared their ADP photos on Pinterest.
• Stockton University(N.J.) held their launch ADP/TDC Economic Inequality Initiative launch event. For more information, resources and upcoming events for the Stockton Economic Inequality Initiative, click here. Read the team’s blog here.
• Texas A&M – Central Texas hosted a Provost Lecture Series event focused on youth homelessness as part of their participation in the ADP/TDC Economic Inequality Initiative. Learn more here and here.
• University of Central Oklahoma: The UCO American Democracy Project organized efforts throughout the fall semester that resulted in 3.8 percent of Central’s full-time student body registering to vote for the first time.
• University of Missouri St. Louis held an essay contest as part of their commemoration of Constitution Day 2015 asking students, “What does freedom mean to you?” Undergraduate student Myra Dotzel won the essay contest. Learn more here.
• University of Nebraska- Kearney: Tom Clemente, an expert on genetically modified organisms spoke about biotechnology in agriculture as part of their Science Café program.
• University of Northern Iowa: A UNI professor and ADP coordinator wrote about the Iran Nuclear Deal. Learn more here. UNI held events describing unlikely friendships and literacy. Learn more here.
• University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh: Along with ADP, Oshkosh has created a webpage to inform their students on local voting information.
• Weber State University(Utah) and Rutgers University – Camden (N.J.) are two of this year’s five 2015 New York Life Higher Education Civic Engagement Award This award is given by ADP partner The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars.

What We’re Reading 

• Wilderness and the Common Good-A New Ethic of Citizenship
  University of Wisconsin La Crosse political science faculty member Jo Arney has a new book out — Wilderness and the Common Good: A New Ethic of Citizenship (Fulcrum, 2015). Arney is one of the ADP faculty members leading our Stewardship of Public Lands 2015 faculty seminar as well as curating the emerging Stewardship of Public Lands AASCU National Blended Course. • New Report on the Health of State Democracies
  The Center for American Progress (CAP) released a new report about the health of state democracies.  At a panel discussion in early July, Delegate Alfonso Lopez (D-VA), former state senator Nina Turner (D-OH), political/election law attorney Dara Lindenbaum, and Senator Richard Katz (R-ME) shared their thoughts about the topic with moderator Michele Jawando of CAP. #CLDE15 Meeting in Review: Leveraging Academic and Student Affairs Partnerships to Advance Civic Learning & Democratic Engagement
Our recent 2015 ADP/TDC/NASPA Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement (CLDE) Meeting in New Orleans, La. brought together a collection of faculty, students, administrators, community partners and representatives from our national sponsor and partner organizations committed to advancing civic learning and democratic engagement through higher education. Collectively, we considered one of higher education’s civic missions: to act as stewards of the communities they inhabit as well as to prepare students to be stewards of their present and future communities. Examining Economic Inequality at SUNY Cortland
In June, SUNY Cortland, one of 30 campuses participating in our ADP/TDC Economic Inequality Initiative, launched a monthly series of lunchtime talks addressing issues of economic inequality. The goal of the initiative is to bring together the area’s campus and community members to study the relationships between economic inequality, public policy, business opportunity, social mobility and civic engagement. Members discuss issues that include student loan debt, a livable hourly wage, and poverty. Read more here.

AASCU Policy Publication: Partnering for Prosperity
The American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) is pleased to present Partnering for Prosperity: Advancing the Institutional and State Agenda Through an Effective Collegiate State Relations Program. The report reflects AASCU’s longstanding efforts in fostering optimal state relations and state policy enabling America’s public colleges and universities to fully serve the public good.
