Walking our Talk: Converting Civic-Focused Mission Statements to Student Learning
Many higher education institutions include complex civic concepts as part of their missions, but how do we know if we are translating these lofty goals into student learning? Assessment is often viewed as a secondary or even bureaucratic institutional practice but done well it supports learning improvement processes that prioritize student development, organize institutional efforts, and direct change. This session will discuss recent ETS research initiatives focused on national trends in the assessment of civic competency and engagement as well as an institutional perspective on assessing and addressing these skills in students.

Nominations for Three ADP National Civic Engagement Awards Due March 30, 2018

• The William M. Plater Award for Leadership in Civic Engagement is given each year to an AASCU chief academic officer in recognition of his or her leadership in advancing the civic mission of the campus. Chief academic officers may be nominated by anyone. The president or chancellor must endorse the nomination. Nomination materials for the 2018 Plater Award must be submitted electronically by March 30, 2018. For information and cover sheet: http://www.aascu.org/programs/adp/awards/WilliamPlater/
  
• The John Saltmarsh Award for Emerging Leaders in Civic Engagement is presented annually to an emerging leader (e.g., early career faculty/staff) in the civic engagement field from an AASCU institution. Emerging Leaders may be nominated by anyone. Nomination materials for the 2018 Saltmarsh Award must be submitted electronically by March 30, 2018. • The Barbara Burch Award for Faculty Leadership in Civic Engagement is presented annually to a senior faculty member in the civic engagement field from an AASCU institution. Senior ADP faculty members may be nominated by anyone. The provost or chief academic officer must endorse the nomination. HOW TO MAKE YOUR CAMPUS A POLLING PLACE

College and university students face several obstacles to voting that make them less likely to go to the polls, even if they are registered to vote. The most common complaint from students is that even though they want to vote, they do not have access to transportation and cannot easily get to their polling station. Establishing a polling place on campus for early voting and/or Election Day not only makes casting a ballot more convenient, it can lead to higher student voting rates.

Since the publication of the A Crucible Moment report in 2012, many higher education professionals have engaged further in the Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement (CLDE) field in the hopes of fulfilling the vision laid out by our colleagues to create a more socially just, civically engaged, and democratically-minded future.

In this session, participants will engage in conversation about the emerging theory of change [PDF] for the annual CLDE conference and CLDE work. How are these components – civic ethos, civic literacy and skill building, civic inquiry, civic action, and civic agency – actualized on our campuses and outside of the campus community. This session is intended to further explain the emerging theory of change, how one might incorporate the theory into your work and how the CLDE18 planning committee envisions what a thriving democracy is.

This webinar is particularly intended to assist individuals preparing proposals for CLDE 2018 (due January 29, 2017) given its focus on the emergent theory of change. Learn more about this session here.

This session is designed around our emergent theory of change which poses four important questions:

• Purpose: What are the key features of the thriving democracy we aspire to enact and support through our work?
• Learning Outcomes: What knowledge, skills, and dispositions do people need in order to help create and contribute to a thriving democracy?
• Pedagogy: How can we best foster the acquisition and development of the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for a thriving democracy?

Assessing Campus Contributions to Regional Civic Health and Equity

Thursday, November 2, 1-2:30 pm MST

Too often, campus officials point to input measures such as the number of volunteer hours and financial resources given and service-learning courses offered when assessing the contributions of community/campus engagement. While these input measures tell campus and community stakeholders a lot about a campus’s commitment to community engagement, they reveal little about the measurable contributions of campus/community engagement. Input measures also often fail to involve community members in assessing campus/community engagement. This yearlong, statewide Collective Impact project involving four Colorado universities, community leaders, and Campus Compact of the Mountain West created strategies for assessing the contributions of campus/community engagement to regional civic health and equity. Of particular importance was ensuring community stakeholders were closely involved in the development and dissemination of assessment tools.

During this webinar, representatives from Colorado State University-Pueblo, University of Colorado Denver, the University of Northern Colorado, the University of Denver, and Campus Compact Mountain West present lessons learned and strategies used to assess campus contributions to regional civic health and equity. Webinar participants will have access to the final assessment tools created by each campus. Finally, CCMW presenters will connect these civic health and equity assessments to the work of the Civic Health Network, to national efforts that support institutional goals such as the creation of a Civic Action Plan, and to applying for the Carnegie Foundation’s elective Community Engagement Classification.
