Two potential civic engagement opportunities of interest for undergraduate students. Note: These are not related to ADP. Please direct all questions to the appropriate programs.

Summer Service Scholars (SSS) is an academic internship program in New York’s State Capital through the Siena College Center for Academic Community Engagement. Accepted Summer Service Scholars spend 9 weeks with a nonprofit community partner in the Capital Region, working on projects that build capacity within the organization. SSS provides participants with engaging and valuable experience working with nonprofits, and an opportunity to engage in conversations about social justice with a cohort of other students interested in making a difference in the community.

In conjunction with their full-time service, participants enroll in a Siena College course, Internships in Community Development, for 0-6 credits, meeting once a week on Siena’s campus for seminars that focus on professional and community development. Scholars have the opportunity to utilize on-campus housing at Siena, and can apply to a competitive stipend pool once accepted to the program.

The William & Mary Office of Community Engagement is now accepting applications for our 2018-19 public service fellowships:

Recent college graduates have the opportunity to serve for 9 months in Williamsburg, VA. Three of those positions are based in our office and focus on engaging students in the work of active citizenship through student advising and program oversight. The fourth fellowship is community-based, increasing the capacity of local non-profit Housing Partnerships Inc.

The 18-19 fellows will serve from August 6, 2018- May 3, 2019. They will receive a stipend as well as free housing in our graduate complex.

Through the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute’s partnership with the American Association of State Colleges & Universities (AASCU), students from campuses associated with the American Democracy Project and The Democracy Commitment are eligible for dedicated scholarships for the Leadership and the American Presidency (LTAP) program in Washington, DC for undergraduate students.

Our organizations’ shared missions of cultivating citizen leaders who are engaged members of their communities, prompts us to award selected students from these campuses scholarships no less than $2500 and $4000 for the Summer and Fall terms, respectively.

We’re Roadtrip Nation, and we send people on road trips to talk to individuals who’ve built lives around what they love. We film it all and turn it into a show to inspire people to go after their interests.

This time, fueled by the ACT Center for Equity in Learning and with the support of Michelle Obama’s Better Make Room campaign, we’re sending students who’ve beaten the odds to make it to college (or are on their way!) on a four-week road trip across the U.S. to talk to people who have overcome struggles to succeed. If you’ve overcome educational, societal, or financial hurdles, or faced down odds that might have kept you from getting to where you are today—we’re looking for you.

Essential Details

• The application is open to current and prospective students in community college, four-year colleges or universities, or industry training programs who are between the ages of 18-26.
• Applicants must be available to commit to travel from July 16 through August 10, 2017. If chosen, you’ll travel in a Roadtrip Nation RV to meet industry leaders and explore pathways within a variety of fields.
• Individuals who are chosen will help plan the trip, researching and booking interviews alongside Roadtrip Nation.
• This is for a documentary, so you’ll be filmed, and the footage may be shared on public television and other video platforms.
• All travel expenses, plus a daily stipend for food, are paid for by Roadtrip Nation.

AASCU International Education Opportunities for Faculty and Students

AASCU is pleased to announce a professional development opportunity for faculty at member campuses:

Japan Studies Institute (JSI),  Dates: June 5-18, 2017
Application Deadline: February 28, 2017

The Japan Studies Institute (JSI) offers AASCU faculty members without prior experience in Japanese studies to learn from scholars, business leaders, artists and journalists about Japan, both past and present. The two week institute, located on the campus of San Diego State university, encourages participants to develop strategies for incorporating Japanese studies into courses on their campuses. The Institute involves intensive seminars, lectures, readings, films, and cultural activities related to Japanese history, culture, literature, government, business, language and education. Previous programs have included topics as diverse as wartime and occupation Japan, social relations and the changing role of women in Japan, Japanese foreign policy and regional relations, classical music, ikebana, calligraphy, survival Japanese, Japanese film in the classroom, and philosophical and religious traditions in Japan. The formal program is complemented by a number of off-campus and evening activities. Institute faculty will include scholars, representatives from the local Japanese community, artists, journalists, and government officials.  Most of the costs of the JSI are covered by a grant from the Japan Studies Institute endowment.

AASCU is pleased to announce study-abroad opportunities for students at member campuses:

 ·         Scholarships for Undergraduate Study in China

We are pleased to announce that the Educational Office, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, in Washington, D.C., has approved the Chinese Government Scholarship awards for U.S. undergraduate students attending AASCU member colleges and universities for the 2017 to 2018 academic year. This year, we are able to offer scholarships for one academic year (Sept. 2017 – July 2018), or semester programs in either the Fall (Sept. 2017 – Feb. 2018) or Spring (March 2018 – July 2018).

 ·         2017 China Summer Practicum 

AASCU has partnered with Dalian Jiaotong University in Dalian, China to provide American students from AASCU member institutions with a 2017 Summer China Practicum. The two-week study and culture practicum will be held in two cycles, May and June 2017. The program will include Chinese language and cultural learning, field trips to historical sites, workshops on Chinese traditions, food, arts and crafts, as well as visits to companies and industries. All participants will receive a Certificate of Completion from Dalian Jiaotong University, with a description of class hours, on-site cultural activity hours, and practicum hours. The entire practicum could yield up to 1 to 2 transfer credits depending on each individual institution’s credit transfer policy.
