Our friends and partners at The Democracy Commitment (TDC) invite you to participate in their Inaugural Immersive Civic Learning Institute. TDC is a non-partisan national organization dedicated to advancing democracy and citizenship in our community colleges.  Reacting to the Past (RTTP) consists of elaborate games, set in the past, in which students are assigned roles informed by classic texts in the history of ideas. This immersive pedagogy enhances history and political science courses and features civic skill building which is embedded in the games. Pioneered by historian Dr. Mark C. Carnes, RTTP has been implemented at over 350 colleges and universities in the U.S. and abroad.

College ​faculty and administrators ​are ​invited ​to ​register ​for ​this Immersive Civic Learning Institute ​presented by TDC’s ​new Civic ​Leadership ​Academy ​in coordination with the Reacting ​Consortium (RC).

Matto, Alison Rios Millett McCartney, and Dick Simpson, the editors of this 2017 American Political Science Association publication, will share with participants a review of the goals, challenges and rewards of integrating civic education into the curriculum, while highlighting best practices across disciplines and campuses. The publication includes a diverse group of 38 contributors who approach civic engagement education from many perspectives and this webinar – as well as the text and accompanying website — is a great resource for any educator.

Speakers

Elizabeth Bennion
Elizabeth Bennion is a professor of political science at Indiana University South Bend (IUSB). In addition to teaching American politics courses, Bennion is the founding director of IUSB’s American Democracy Project and host of WNIT’s live weekly television program Politically Speaking. In these capacities she moderates political discussions, public issue forums, and candidate debates for local, state, and national candidates. Bennion has won numerous (national, state, and local) awards for her teaching and service, and has published widely in academic books, journals, and newsletters. Her teaching, research, and service all promote civic education and engagement. She is currently working on a national survey of student leaders, a study of youth political ambition, and a multi-campus voter registration field experiment. Bennion coedited the previous APSA book Teaching Civic Engagement: From Student to Active Citizen. She lives in South Bend with her husband and four children.

Elizabeth C. Matto
Elizabeth C. Matto is an associate research professor at the Eagleton Institute of Politics and the director of the Institute’s Center for Youth Political Participation (CYPP). She earned her doctorate in American politics at George Washington University and, prior to her work at Eagleton, taught a variety of courses at Princeton University, Temple University, and George Washington University. As director of CYPP, Matto leads research as well as educational and public service efforts designed to encourage and support the political learning of high school and college students and civic action among young adults. In 2016, she was the recipient of the Craig L. Brians Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research & Mentorship by the American Political Science Association.

Alison Rios Millett McCartney
Alison Rios Millett McCartney is professor of political science and faculty director of the Honors College at Towson University outside of Baltimore, Maryland. She contributed to and coedited another volume on this topic, Teaching Civic Engagement: From Student to Active Citizen, with Elizabeth Bennion and Dick Simpson in 2013 and has published other work connecting civic engagement education and international relations in the Journal of Political Science Education. McCartney is also very involved in undergraduate research and teaching international negotiation simulations. She has received several teaching awards including the University of Maryland System Regents’ Award for Mentoring, the Maryland-DC Campus Compact Award for Service-Learning Scholarship, and the Towson University Service-Learning Faculty Member Award. She received her BA from Syracuse University and her masters and PhD from the University of Virginia.

Dick Simpson
Dick Simpson has uniquely combined a distinguished academic career with public service in government. He is a former Chicago alderman and candidate for US Congress.  He has published widely, been an outstanding teacher, and affected public policy. He began his academic career at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1967 where he has taught for 50 years. At UIC he received the highest awards given for teaching and the American Political Science Association (APSA) and Pi Sigma Alpha National Award for Outstanding Teaching. He is a former department head (2006–2012), a previous director of the department’s Preparing Future Faculty program, and currently professor of the political science at UIC.

 

 

 

Announcing the 2017 ADP Civic Fellows

ADP is excited to announce our inaugural cohort of ADP Civic Fellows. These six ADP Civic Fellows will explore assessment, research and programmatic efforts that enact and support ADP’s mission and national work during a one-year renewable term. ADP invited applicants for this opportunity designed to give professionals/scholars in our network a national platform to develop their research and programmatic ideas that correlate with on-going ADP initiatives on a national scale​.

Each of the six ADP Civic Fellows will receive support from the ADP national office in the form of programmatic opportunities (e.g., webinars, conference presentations), publication opportunities (e.g., blog posts, monographs, reports and journal articles), leadership opportunities (e.g., serving on steering committee and/or appropriate initiative and/or network teams) and free registration to an appropriate AASCU event /conference. ADP Civic Fellows will be part of a cohort experience and will work closely with our national manager and steering committee to design and advance ADP national initiatives.

2017 ADP Civic Fellows

Mike Caulfield

Mike Caulfield is the director of blended and networked learning at Washington State University Vancouver. Caulfield was actively involved in ADP’s eCitizenship Initiative in 2009 and is the leader of the more recent Digital Polarization Initiative, otherwise known as DigiPo. Caulfield’s dedication to advancing online community learning and ensuring informed civic engagement brings life to DigiPo’s goals of building student web literacy and involving students in a cross-institutional project to fact-check, annotate, and provide context to news stories.

The Digital Polarization Initiative, Caulfield’s work as a Civic Fellow in partnership with ADP, hopes to eliminate the spread and normalization of “fake news,” the pervasiveness of online “callout culture,” state-sponsored hacking campaigns that breed distrust, and the impact of algorithmic behavior that prevents users from viewing online content from more than one perspective. It is Caulfield and ADP’s hope that students will learn not only to be more discerning of the information they trust but also how to help fix the problems in our current information environment

David Hoffman

David Hoffman, the Assistant Director of Student Life for Civic Agency at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), is an ADP Civic Fellow with a plan to affect change. A dedicated, long-time member of UMBC’s community, Hoffman understands theory, service, civic engagement and leadership.

Hoffman has already been heavily involved in ADP’s work in recent years, first as a member of the steering committee and later as a member of several Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement (CLDE) planning committees. Hoffman’s “Theory of Change” was an integral part of the 2017 CLDE meeting, prompting critical conversations about our democracy. Hoffman hopes to expand and improve his Theory of Change in partnership with ADP and then explore its impact at the 2018 CLDE meeting.

Stephen Hunt

Stephen Hunt, professor and Executive Director of the School of Communication at Illinois State University in Normal, IL is ADP Civic Fellow for Political Engagement. Hunt specializes in instructional communication, debate and communication pedagogy. His research reflects his interest in the pedagogy of civic and political engagement, critical thinking and analysis and the assessment of communication skills. Hunt’s dedication to training students and educating them about communication and speech will lend to his work with ADP and his expertise will help improve ADP’s programming.

In partnership with ADP, Hunt plans to lead a new research project on nonpartisan political learning and engagement and spearhead the ADP political engagement learning network. Hunt will bring his wealth of research experience and deep prowess in communication pedagogy to ADP to inspire change and growth in the network.

Morgan Lewing

Morgan Lewing is an assistant professor of Educational Leadership at Texas A&M-Central Texas and an ADP Civic Fellow for faculty development.  His research primarily focuses on the relationship between faculty member’s commitment to service-learning and the support provided by their institutions.  A recent area of interest centers on millennial faculty members committed to community engagement, and Lewing hopes to leverage his findings towards the development of intentionally designed ADP programs providing support to early-career faculty members.

Specifically, in partnership with the ADP, Lewing will lead a new research project aimed at identifying motivations, perceptions, and needed areas of professional development for early-career faculty members that engage, or may be interested in, community engagement.  These findings will then be utilized to ground the design of an ADP Early-Career Faculty Institute that attempts to build understanding and capacity in future community engagement leaders.

Molly Kerby

Molly Kerby is an associate professor in the Department of Diversity & Community Studies and Director of Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) at Western Kentucky University (WKU). Her current research and teaching focuses on issues pertaining to assessment in higher education, organizational sustainability/resilience, democratic engagement, and community-based research. She has been an active member of the American Democracy Project since 2004.

Kerby will serve as a Civic Fellow for assessment and will chair ADP’s new civic assessment learning network, providing a stimulus for ADP to re-envision assessment practices. The first, and foremost, part of the plan creates a collaborative group of highly experienced assessment researchers and academic faculty who are involved in creating civic and democratic engagement projects at ADP schools. The goal is to identify current best practices in assessment, evaluation, and data collection methods that address immediate and future demands. In the second phase of this project, the collaborative team will begin creating an assessment plan to empirically measure the impact of ADP on member institutions. Although the design of this effort will grow organically through collaboration, the proposed the blueprint will be grounded in the theoretical notions of risk and resilience.

Leah Murray

Leah Murray, is both a professor of Political Science and Philosophy and the Democratic Engagement Coordinator in the Center for Community Engaged Learning at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. Murray dedicated her own education to studying political science and is now committed to educating her students about government and politics. Murray’s courses are particularly relevant in this political climate and undoubtedly guide and her inform students on their path to become civically engaged citizens. Murray’s devotion to community service and her desire to advance the effectiveness of the American Democracy Project make her Civil Fellowship all the more timely and meaningful.

As a Civic Fellow, Murray intends to improve how information about ADP’s work is spread. Murray feels that not all members of ADP can attend the yearly Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement Conference and therefore do not have adequate access to all the important information spread at these meetings. Murray intends to create a protocol to gather information from these conferences and distribute it using various means through various networks so that the information becomes more accessible. Smooth communication is an important part of what makes any organization function and with Murray’s help, expertise and dedication ADP hopes to improve these connections.

AASCU International Education Opportunities for Faculty and Students

AASCU is pleased to announce a professional development opportunity for faculty at member campuses:

Japan Studies Institute (JSI),  Dates: June 5-18, 2017
Application Deadline: February 28, 2017

The Japan Studies Institute (JSI) offers AASCU faculty members without prior experience in Japanese studies to learn from scholars, business leaders, artists and journalists about Japan, both past and present. The two week institute, located on the campus of San Diego State university, encourages participants to develop strategies for incorporating Japanese studies into courses on their campuses. The Institute involves intensive seminars, lectures, readings, films, and cultural activities related to Japanese history, culture, literature, government, business, language and education. Previous programs have included topics as diverse as wartime and occupation Japan, social relations and the changing role of women in Japan, Japanese foreign policy and regional relations, classical music, ikebana, calligraphy, survival Japanese, Japanese film in the classroom, and philosophical and religious traditions in Japan. The formal program is complemented by a number of off-campus and evening activities. Institute faculty will include scholars, representatives from the local Japanese community, artists, journalists, and government officials.  Most of the costs of the JSI are covered by a grant from the Japan Studies Institute endowment.

 ·         Scholarships for Undergraduate Study in China

We are pleased to announce that the Educational Office, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, in Washington, D.C., has approved the Chinese Government Scholarship awards for U.S. undergraduate students attending AASCU member colleges and universities for the 2017 to 2018 academic year. This year, we are able to offer scholarships for one academic year (Sept. 2017 – July 2018), or semester programs in either the Fall (Sept. 2017 – Feb. 2018) or Spring (March 2018 – July 2018).

 ·         2017 China Summer Practicum 

AASCU has partnered with Dalian Jiaotong University in Dalian, China to provide American students from AASCU member institutions with a 2017 Summer China Practicum. The two-week study and culture practicum will be held in two cycles, May and June 2017. The program will include Chinese language and cultural learning, field trips to historical sites, workshops on Chinese traditions, food, arts and crafts, as well as visits to companies and industries. All participants will receive a Certificate of Completion from Dalian Jiaotong University, with a description of class hours, on-site cultural activity hours, and practicum hours. The entire practicum could yield up to 1 to 2 transfer credits depending on each individual institution’s credit transfer policy.

Deliberative Dialogues “Train the Trainer” Workshop

ADP/TDC’s Economic Inequality Initiative is proud to announce a special professional development opportunity for participants interested in training in moderating deliberative dialogues. We will be hosting a Deliberative Dialogue “Train the Trainer” Workshop at Keene State College (N.H.) on Friday, October 28th. Kara Lindaman of Winona State University (Minn.)and John Theis of Lone Star College (Texas) will conduct the training from 9 am to 4 pm on the Keene State Campus. The workshop will provide moderator training for deliberative dialogues and attendees will learn how to train moderators as well.
