Our 2016 Civic Learning & Democratic Engagement Meeting organized by AASCU’s American Democracy Project, The Democracy Commitment and NASPA (#CLDE16) is fast approaching from June 2-4, 2016 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Register here.

Attended by presidents, provosts, faculty, staff and students, this meeting is perfect for campus teams ready to prepare to apply or re-apply for the elective Carnegie Community Engagement Classification or to ensure that all students are prepared to be informed, engaged members of our campuses and communities.

Key features:

  • Pre-conference workshops on assessment, non-partisan political engagement, and democratic dialogue and deliberation forums.
  • CivEd Talksby three leading members of the civic engagement movement in higher education:
    • Austin Belali, Director, Youth Engagement Fund;
    • Kei Kawashima-Ginsberg, Director of CIRCLE, Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service at Tufts University; and
    • David Hoffman, Assistant Director of Student Life for Civic Agency, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).
  • Plenary session focused on talking across political and ideological differences to resolve challenging and controversial issues facing our democracy, using the State of Indiana’s recent legislation surrounding LGBT rights and religious freedom protection featuring WNIT-TV’s Politically Speakinghosted by Indiana State University South Bend political science professor Elizabeth Bennion.
  • A tour of the original Democracy Plaza(DP) at the nearby Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
  • Keynote session on the National Study on Student Learning Voting and Engagementwith Nancy Thomas of the Institute for Higher Education and Democracy featuring panelists from the University of Houston-Downtown, the University of South Carolina-Upstate and other campuses.
  • Opportunities for networking and exchanging of promising practices and emerging research and ideas with colleagues old and new!
